Yaar, this one is actually wild. The govt is paying Gen Z Rs 9000 a month to intern, and 549 companies have already signed up. Not a token skill drive nobody visits, this is the revamped PM Internship Scheme placing 18 to 25 year olds into paid roles at real companies across 19 sectors, from semiconductors to fintech.

No LinkedIn influencer told you this scheme existed.

Reddit threads and family dinners used to be where career advice came from. Now it is a government portal. The Ministry of Corporate Affairs confirmed over 300 companies had joined the pilot as of April, and industry trackers now put the count at 549 across 19 sectors and 32 states and union territories, with semiconductors, renewable energy and global capability centres joining the older, more traditional roster.

Why the Govt Paying Gen Z Rs 9000 Move Actually Adds Up

Money hits different when rent is due, bilkul no cap. The stipend jumped from Rs 5000 to Rs 9000 a month, Rs 8100 from the government by direct transfer and Rs 900 from the company. Every intern also gets a one time joining grant of Rs 6000 for relocation. The official Ministry of Corporate Affairs release confirms interns now get that Rs 9000 minimum for the full internship, a real jump from what the pilot phase paid a year ago.

Arre, that is nearly double the old payout.

The eligibility rules got a full reset too. Age moved from 21 to 24 up to 18 to 25, so final year students can apply before their degree even wraps up. The government also scrapped the CSR obligation, so smaller startups can join, not just the big CSR-heavy corporates. Pass Class 10, have no full time job, and you qualify. Matlab, the entry bar dropped to almost nothing.

How 549 Companies Ended Up Backing PM Internship Scheme

Context makes this scheme genuinely urgent, not just generous. India lost over 40000 tech jobs in April alone, and that is not a rumour, that is the reality behind the government's own scramble to widen this scheme. TCS alone reported a headcount drop of over 22000 employees in FY26, and AI is quietly eating entry-level IT, content, and data-entry roles.

Sab log ab yehi keh rahe hain, campus placements are becoming a losing bet.

The traditional hiring pipeline for fresh graduates is cracking, and nobody is handing out a safety net. A stipend-backed internship with real industry exposure is not a luxury anymore, it is survival infrastructure for an entire generation stuck between a degree and a job offer that keeps not showing up.

The sector list reads like a 2030 hiring wishlist. IT, BFSI, renewable energy, semiconductors, FMCG and global capability centres are all on it, the same industries multinational companies keep opening new campuses for in tier 2 cities like Pune, Indore and Coimbatore. Jugaad alone will not get you into these rooms anymore, a structured internship on your resume actually might.

How to Actually Use the PM Internship Scheme Before Your Batch Does

Applications run fully online at pminternship.mca.gov.in, and companies post openings in waves, so timing matters more than you think. Internships now run 6 to 9 months instead of the older 12. What makes this genuinely worth your time is the macro reality on the ground, where the IT sector churning through replacement hires means fresh graduates cannot count on campus placements the way seniors once did, so treat applications like a job hunt, not a formality.

Ekdum simple: apply early, apply everywhere.

The BFSI sector alone is projecting 250000 new permanent jobs by 2030, nearly half of them opening up in tier 2 and tier 3 cities. Combine a PMIS internship in a growth sector with the right certification and you are not killing time between semesters, you are building a career moat a normal placement cell cannot replicate. Does your college placement cell even know this scheme exists, or will you be the one who tells them?

Rs 9,000 a month sounds modest until you run the math on what it buys a 21 year old in tier 2 India: rent, transport, and a little left over each week. 549 companies is a start, not a finish line, and the real test is whether these internships convert into full time offers or become a subsidised task force. Kya baat hai agar tumhara sector ismein already hai. Which sector would you actually pick from this scheme?
